Lucy & Chenghuan’s Engagement Shoot Bristol

Lucy & Chenghuan's Engagement Shoot - St. Michael's Hill, Bristol

When Chenghuan and Lucy contacted me to ask about a shoot their request was a little different from most enquiries.

Both are originally from China but study at Bristol University so they wanted a set of photographs that capture their life together in Bristol – as well as their love for each other – to share with their friends and family back home. After chatting a bit we agreed what they were looking for was an extended engagement shoot.

Chenghuan and Lucy had loads of great ideas for interesting locations. We met at the top of St Michael’s hill, with it’s stunning view of Bristol, before moving on to some gorgeous locations on the University grounds and around Park Street, in the heart of the city.

This was a great choice for our first location as, even though the couple were a little shy in front of the camera at first, they felt at home in their surroundings – and this came through in their pictures. They are so obviously relaxed, happy and in love.

The archways and grand buildings at the university made a gorgeous backdrop for their portraits as well as having special importance to them as a couple. We even used one of their lecture theatres as a setting. I love the contrast between this and the more traditional scenic backdrops – we had real fun interacting with the environment and I got some great playful shots.

Our last outdoor location on the campus was one of my personal favourites: the mirror sculpture. This unusual spot made for some unique and beautiful images and really allowed us to have fun with the photos.

From there we moved on to Clifton, in time for the golden hour before sunset, to take advantage of the beautiful scenery. We got some great shots on the banks around the observatory and in front of Bristol’s major landmark – the Suspension Bridge over the Avon Gorge – making the most of the haze as the light started to turn.

We arrived to the Clifton Downs just before sunset for the final few pictures. The blue sky above the sunset made a simple but stunning backdrop that framed the couple perfectly.

It was a lovely day with Lucy and Chenghuan and I think the images I took on the day really capture their personalities and love for each other.
